Featured Hypnotherapist - Dale WedlockDaleW

Hi I am Dale J Wedlock and I am proud to be a Senior Professional Member of Hypnosis New Zealand and represent HNZ with my clinic located down in the deep south of New Zealand.

Dunedin is a city that is big enough to be busy, but small enough to care.  Renowned for its scenic coastline home to an array of wildlife including the world famous Royal Albatross colony at Tairoa Heads.  Dunedin is also the home to a fantastic university, so well known that even Grant Boddington's daughter is attending here.

I have been using Hypnotherapy since 2007 but it was not until I attended Grants course in Dip of Advanced Hypnotherapy in Auckland that I grew to a new level as a Hypnotherapist. I believe it was a combination of both a very well run professional course and being amongst other positive minded Hypnotherapists wishing to advance their skills.

I am sure a lot of you reading this article are doing fantastic work in helping people be the best they can be by overcoming fears, moving forward with a new motivation. Well that’s what I am doing here - having clients coming from Dunedin, Invercargill and Central Otago.

I believe a good Hypnotherapist is a person who can apply both good technique and understanding to a client’s perceived problems or challenges through one’s own life skills from previous experiences, or prior jobs or careers.

My journey and experiences from life that I bring to Hypnotherapy are from various areas.  My experience with the  armed forces, personal protection in Australia, and 10 years to date as a senior corrections officer where I am still employed at the Otago corrections facility. These roles, especially as a corrections officer have had me work with people at their lowest time, where I have helped prisoners re-focus on a change in direction to better their lives. I have motivated many of them towards leaving their past decisions and not being held back from a positive future.  So Hypnotherapy is now my passion as I am very much about people moving forward and being the best they can be.

My clinic is in the suburb of St Clair, near one of our many popular surfing beaches populated with cafe bars selling fantastic Central Otago wines. So please, if you are ever down this way and would like to meet for local information, or just a coffee, please feel free to contact me.

Building a Successful Hypnotherapy Practice

By Meredith McCarthy
MeredithMMy name is Meredith McCarthy and I am the current President of the New Zealand Association of Professional Hypnotherapists.  My journey to becoming a clinical hypnotherapist started by seeing a little advert in the newspaper advertising classes in the Wellington area for gaining a diploma in clinical hypnotherapy.  That was over 17 years ago.   Exactly two weeks after I got my diploma, I opened the door to my new office, placed the sign down on the street outside the building and half an hour later my first client knocked on the door.  From that moment I kept building my business into what it has become today.

Back then, being in business was tough. I felt isolated in my field and learnt the hard way what not to do in business. It was a time when the internet was not a tool for business and the yellow pages was the biggest outlay when it came to spending your advertising dollars.  I would run weekly adverts in the two main newspapers and word of mouth was slow.  Back then, many of my clients still thought of hypnotherapy being something that they would keep private.  I would invite people to come in for a half hour free consultation and I would have to spend a lot of that time normalising the process and educating them in what hypnotherapy is.  Most of the time they would become a client, but doing it that way meant I was giving a lot of my time away.

When I see what has happened to the world since I started, it has gone through a revolution in the way that we work. Now, if you wish to find out something, you just open up your laptop and google what you want to know and up comes the information at your fingertips. Often those businesses that have not kept up with the times (by having their own website) are left in the dust, while others with often a gift with technology take the lead in business. We have social media like Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and many more. We are having to re-think how we do business. I used to have to answer my phone because no one would leave a message.  Now hardly anyone leaves a message because they just book online, email me, or send a text. It is vital to keep up with the changing advances in doing business.

As the current President of the NZAPH, I would love to create some professional development days around the country to help hypnotherapists come together and advance their businesses and embrace technology, so they can stay competitive and at the same time build a strong supportive environment of mentorship within our membership. I feel that by becoming a member of the NZAPH and being part of the New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation is an important step to unite Hypnotherapists so we can be taken seriously. If you are interested in knowing more, or being part of this; please feel free to email me info@meredithmccarthy.com or call me 04 577 1116

“Your Business - Mind, Body and Soul”
18th National Hypnotherapy Conference Weekend and Award Dinner

3 – 4 September, 2011
Barrycourt Hotel & Conference Centre
10-20 Gladstone Road
Parnell, Auckland

PROGRAMME CHANGE: a presenter had to opt out, and Bonnie Reid has put her name forward to present on Holistic Hypnotherapy – 9am Saturday morning.

Because of this change and the delay in sending out this reminder notice the Early Bird cut off date has been extended until 15th August.

This is a comprehensive two day idea exchange, held in Auckland, and packed with enlightening presentations, extraordinary networking opportunities, and plenty of inspiration ... all designed to provide you with an action list filled two days, with new ideas and strategies you can begin using the following week!

These are times of tremendous challenge; they require the best of each of us. By coming together for a weekend of collaborative learning with experienced hypnotherapy practitioners, some experts in their field, we have an opportunity to discover the visions we all share, and understand more deeply the likely realities that will emerge from them.  Such knowledge can help us shape our choices with greater awareness, skill and wisdom.

There are special fee reductions for (current) members of New Zealand Hypnotherapy Associations, and 2011 Hypnotherapy Students.  Check out the full programme on the New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation’s website.

The Gentle Slope Deepener
By Margaret Butler

This induction is the gentle slope induction. In this induction, the client is at his or her favorite natural environment. When they imagine this environment, they imagine a gentle slope. The further down the slope that they move, the more beautiful it gets and the more deeply they relax. The subconscious mind is naturally drawn to the beauty as it increases and the slope down into relaxation is gentle.

The reason for using many natural environments is that some clients vacation better in the woods while others prefer the beach. If a client has phobias of one environment, you can use another. For example, I had a client who was in a group session in which they were using ocean sounds to relax. During the session, the client became anxious. She reported that her brother had died in front of her. The beach sounds sounded angry to her and she had memories of a long ago time when she was ten and her brother was killed during a storm at sea. She felt much better being able to talk about this.

Another client was afraid of the woods. She felt that bugs would be after her at every turn. She could not even imagine herself willingly going into the woods. She did well in hypnosis with a beach scene.

The gentle slope is useful, because most people are not afraid of a gentle slope. They enjoy the beauty increasing and seem to relax easily.

Clients report that a gentle slope is pleasant. It carries a natural suggestion to go down into relaxation. This suggestion promotes increased ability of the person’s subconscious mind to determine how far down the slope they need to go to reach the proper hypnosis state to achieve their goal. The subconscious mind seems to have its own intuitive power and knows how far down it needs to go. Some people need a deeper session than others. This deepening method seems to appeal to a wide variety of people and is easy for people to imagine. I use this for stop smoking, weight loss, and adhd hypnosis.

Author Resource:- I have been a therapist for many years. My discipline is social work and I am a licensed independent clinical social worker in Massachusetts. I practice in a clinic in Malden Massachusetts where I use both rational emotive therapy and hypnosis to help people achieve their goals. My private practice is also very rewarding in which I do home-based hypnosis.

I live with my husband, a seeing-eye dog named Winston and a retired seeing-eye dog named Leslie.   For more information about me, visit: http://www.at-homehypnotherapy.com.
Spinning Stronger Suggestions
One day workshop – Christchurch 9 Oct 2011

This is a one day workshop that introduces you to skills that will boost your ability to create great suggestions that match the client’s strengths, making it more likely that they will be acted upon and help the client create the change they want.
  • Learn how to identify, in the client’s language, various trance phenomena that they use in their problem and their answer;
  • Using a generalised ‘cognitive process’, identify how the client structures their challenge and their solution;
  • Learn how to spin their trance phenomena and cognitive steps into a web of suggestions that match the client’s strengths;
  • Wrap this up inside hypnotic language patterns to help the client form the thoughts and beliefs to make those suggestions become reality for the future.
This workshop that is Ideal for hypnotherapists and NLPers.  For more details, contact Adrian on adrian@strengthofmind.co.nz
