In
this January 2010 Edition:
Grant's News
& Comments.
Welcome to 2010. I wish a happy
and prosperous New Year to you all! It's hard to believe that we're already
10 years into the 21st century. It seems like only yesterday, that
it was the late 1980s and I was having my first experiences with Hypnosis.
How fast time passes when you're having fun! As with the dawn of
most previous years, this one looks like being another great 12 months.
From my own perspective, it seems
that Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy have weathered the recent recession pretty
well and should be well placed to benefit hugely from the recovery as people
return to a more highly motivated state of mind. So let's work together
to make sure Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are widely used, respected and enjoyed
by thousands more people.
For myself in 2010, it's again full
steam ahead - and I have 3 Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy courses and 2
Advanced Hypnotherapy courses scheduled and already partially filled.
Add them to my Homestudy courses, my 6 websites, my Hypnotherapy practice,
My Mind Mechanics corporate presentations and a few stage shows - and PHEW,
it's going to be a very busy year! However, busy as it will be, I'll still
find the time to maintain my high level of communications and have several
newer options this year.
For
all of you who'd like frequent updates as to what I'm doing and where I'm
doing it, you can now Follow
me on Twitter. I'll be posting my news, course dates and deadlines,
travelling destinations, public engagements, shows, special deals and general
comments about what I'm doing and where I'm doing it. So if you think
I might have some useful information for you, then you're welcome to add
me to your twitter and freely follow me. It will be mostly Hypnosis
related, but a few personal happenings may also slip in
(including the
big OE that Karen & I are taking in February/March).
And for those of you who like to
chat internationally by computer to computer, or by computer to telephone;
then SKYPE is my chosen communications method. My Skype ID is "hypnosisworld".
I've had a Facebook page for sometime
too. You can find me there as "Grant Boddington".

Changing Health Behaviours
A book and CD by Registered Hypnotherapist
Mike Reeves-McMillan
Good advice by itself doesn’t change
behaviour, which is why people struggle to stop smoking, lose weight, exercise
more, sleep well, drink in moderation and deal with stress. So as well
as sound advice on these topics, Changing Health Behaviours:
-
incorporates an MP3 CD with 20 relaxing
tracks to provide motivation along with the information, and
-
teaches simple, practical change techniques
that work in real life.

A
New Decade for Hypnotherapy?
(by Sue Leech)
Has anyone else noticed that hypnosis
has turned a metaphorical corner?
That perceptions of reality have
noticeably altered?
That the World has shrunk but there’s
more in it?
That’s right. In general we
are more aware than ever before, in a more enlightened sort of a way rather
than in a superstitious sort of a way, about ourselves and our environment
and how one reflects and mirrors the other. How the more we give
out the more we receive and of course the alternative also rings true,
the more we close ourselves down the less interaction and the more isolated
we can feel.
Isn’t it great that we have at our
fingertips the techniques to change whatever it is that we want to change,
whether that change is a personal inner change or the ability to dissociate
and assess a situation from a wider more global view to help make clearer
more positive decisions towards a better life for ourselves.
Having been in practice since the
last century (doesn’t that sound solid and dependable?) I’ve certainly
noticed the changes . Clients are more aware when they make first
contact so we are able to pin point their issues and make quick progression
towards resolution in a more ‘everyday conversational’ way, with clients
being able to change focus, or refocus, in a blink of an eye once they
have the tools they need.
So my job as a therapist has changed
from a traditional role to a more interactive one where each client learns
how to achieve rapid catalepsy and change, remove or resolve, whatever
it is that is needed for them in that moment. Being able to converse
with their inner self, or part/s of their inner self and/or direct their
sub-conscious in an aware and alert manner to enable balanced decisions
and actions. Being in control of the hormones that course through
the body (our organic mechanical machine) gives not just insights mentally
but a chance for neutral homeostasis to occur to help in an holistic and
emotionally settling way.
I’ve always been a Dave Elman fan
and still use his rapid techniques as a basis in my clinic with great success,
but the icing on the cake is that today’s clients are more able to switch
between states quite rapidly. To find that part that is holding them
in an old habit/pattern and to be in charge of conversing with it, changing
it, letting it go, regressing to the beginning of ‘that’ time and re-writing
the script and consequently altering every scripted subsequent event,
even out into the future is a revelation and so empowering!
So I send thanks to those other pioneers
who have helped to mould what it is that i do, to Erickson and his modellers,
Bandler & Grinder, to Hall and Bodenheimer, to Igor (I can never pronounce
his surname) and Yapko. And closer to home – to people I’ve actually
met and admire greatly, to Shelley Stockwell-Nicholas, Leon Cowen, Roy
Hunter and my colleagues who help to form the circle of learning within
hypnotherapy in NZ as we converse and convert techniques to even more powerful
tools for our clients – and ourselves.
I’d also like to thank Grant for
all his work in keeping the industry alive – so Thanks Grant!

it is always up to the client to make a conscious choice to take control
over their actions.

Are They
Tricking You? How To Tell If Someone Is REALLY In Trance
(By
Nathan Thomas) [Originally published at www.YourFirstInduction.com]
Often times, it can be hard to tell
whether the person you hypnotize is REALLY 'in trance' and following your
suggestions. Naturally, this is something we need to know, so I'm about
to show you how to read people's unconscious signals, and detect what's
actually going on in their minds.
First of all, in my opinion there
is no such thing as 'in trance' as my philosophy defines hypnosis as a
PROCESS, not a STATE. (You may feel differently, and it is your right to
do so.) Bearing this in mind, there are various levels at which people
can seem to be responding, and all people are very different. That said,
there are a few concrete signs which are quite typical of people in the
responsive, relaxed state (yes, I said state - testament to the fact that
hypnosis is better DONE than analysed) generally named hypnotic 'trance.'
A general rule of body language observation
(that some people will charge you $500.00 to teach!) is that when observing
body language, don't look for a specific signal. Look for CHANGE and COMBINATION.
So, some typical signals of 'hypnosis' are:
- relaxed posture
- eyelid flicker
- eye movement under lids
- moist eyes (during waking hypnosis
/ after the session)
- change in skin tone of face (due
to blood flowing to / from capillaries)
- change in breathing rate
- slight muscle twitches
- slowness of speech
- use of non cognitive but highly
emotive words when talking (i.e. simple language)
- loosening of the jaw and facial
muscles
Again, none of these are absolute,
but a combination of these signals, brought about as a direct result of
what you are doing, can be useful.
There is another important C in body
language, CHANGE, COMBINATION, and, a big one, CALIBRATION. Notice the
way they are before, during and after the induction you do. Establish
a point of reference to use to compare. When / if your subject begins exhibiting
these signals feed them back (i.e. pace and lead). This is a strong convincer,
and is surprisingly powerful.
As an example, you could say: "That's
right, now as I have been talking to you, your breathing has slowed, your
eye lids, have begun to flicker, and your muscles are relaxing, which means
that you are already experiencing deep hypnosis, going deeper, with every
breath you take." Prima facie pacing, leading and cause - effect. If you
feel that, despite your efforts, someone is just playing along, such a
statement as the above (with genuine observations, even if it's as obvious
as 'you are sitting there, breathing...') can cause the subject to begin
to experience 'real' hypnosis.
The best way, in my opinion, to test
the responsiveness of a subject, lies not however in passive observation,
but in their response to your suggestions. If they follow the suggestion
- they're in hypnosis! Well, usually anyway. Occasionally there will be
that person who, out of hallucinated politeness or the desire to win one
over on you, will fake responding to the suggestion. In that case, rely
on and trust your intuition, and look out for the quality and nature of
the subject's actions.
For example, if you are doing arm
levitation (a great deepener and convincer), look out for the jerky, ideodynamic
qualities of genuine unconscious, almost dreamlike, movement. If you still
feel that your subject isn't responding, remember the big word UTILIZATION.
Take what they are giving you (hint: EVERYTHING they do, say, think or
even POSSIBLY think can be utilized) and link it back to what you want.
For example, "you may be sitting
there, and that little voice inside your head may be saying [whiny voice]
'oh this will never work,' but I know, and your unconscious knows, that
the more you sit there, still - going deeper, the more your unconscious
realizes - now, that you are already in this trance, you just don't know
which one-derful experience you are finding, now"
Notice all the ambiguity there, and
see if you can guess where the delicate pauses and inflection would go
(it's somewhat hard to communicate via text - but it gives you the opportunity
to put your own spin on it). Also, remember to take control! Fractionation
is a great tool for fixing potentially failed trance, as is conversation.
Be prepared to talk to the subject - in trance - to ask open questions,
and to guide and observe their imagination as it runs free yet targeted
in that magical unconscious way.
Now, this lesson may be a little
more complicated than usual, as I am trying to communicate an art rather
than a science. With practice comes intuition, and with mastery comes confidence
in that intuition - so get hypnotizing, and get learning!
Cheers,
Nathan Thomas

As a hypnotherapist, it is always a
pleasure to learn from some of the greats in our field. Dr. Stephen Gilligan
has been honoured by the Milton Erickson Foundation by receiving the rarely
given Lifetime Achievement Award in honour of his many contributions. Steve
studied directly with Dr. Milton H. Erickson for many years and is known
widely for his neo-Ericksonian approach which incorporates his own work
on self-relations.
We are pleased to announce
Trance Camp 2010 being held in Sydney in April 2010.
Trance Camp is open to anyone seriously
interested in generative personal change and altered states of consciousness.
This one or two week journey into the self is an experiential community
for learning and experiencing trance while incorporating other consciousness-enhancing
tools into practice. During Trance Camp, you will experience and learn
a variety of skills allowing a new connection to self and personal transformation.
Many participants return to Trance Camp year after year to experience not
only profound trance, but Steve himself. This is a must-be-at workshop
for all hypnotherapists in 2010.
