Grant's Comments
WOW!  What a start to the month! It began for me with the New Zealand Hypnotherapy Federation Conference on the 5th - 6th, then for the 7th - 11th my 5 Day Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy Course - and lastly on the 11th - 12th I attended and spoke at the World Hypnotherapy Conference in Sydney!  Whew! As I write this, I'm still in recovery mode, so that's the reason for a much later newsletter this month.

The next news is: Several of you have pinned me down and twisted my arm right up my back while strongly suggesting that I hold just one more 5 Day Course this year!  Read more about that possibility below and take this opportunity to get the training in before Christmas.

Sales of my new book Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy for Professionals are doing real well. I originally commissioned sufficient on the 1st print for about 2 years, but and have sold 25% already in less than 2 months!  I trust that those of you who've already read it, have discovered a little more about my effective therapy techniques and are adding them to your own tool kit.  A huge thanks to the NZAPH committee for the wonderful award they presented to me at the NZHF conference to celebrate the release. (See pic towards the bottom of this page) Congratulations also to Aaron McLoughlin and Mike Reeves-Smith for their similar publishing awards.

Please enjoy the content of this HYPNOTES - and let me know of any news or events for the November edition.

Review of Roy Hunter's NZHF Presentation
By Paula Clark
Roy Hunter, M.S., FAPHP of Alliance Self-Empowerment Inc. USA., was a presenter and trainer at the 2009 National Hypnotherapy Conference in Auckland.

The style and poise with which Roy delivered both his Saturday presentation and his Sunday workshop was outstanding to say the least.  Roy has a presence and approach that kept the audience focused and “mesmerized” throughout.

His style of hypnotherapy is very much client centred and his theory is that we as therapists can help most of our clients most of the time by using four primary hypnotherapy objectives.

The topic of his half day presentation on Saturday covered these “4 Cornerstones of Successful Hypnotherapy”.
The only tool that Roy made use of throughout his presentation was a square whiteboard on which he drew a square in each corner. So simple, yet so effective.

The first square in the upper left of the board represented step 1
Step 1 - Suggestion and Imagery.  The focus of this cornerstone was to bring home the fact that as hypnotherapists we often centre our sessions on suggestion and imagery as our main tool to help clients through there difficulties.  And often this is successful, however, it is not ALWAYS successful or the catalyst for lasting results.   As Roy quite rightly pointed out, as professional hypnotherapist we need to have the knowledge and training to go further if the client does not respond to suggestion and Imagery
The second square in the top right-hand corner of the whiteboard .represented Step 2 (in the event of Suggestion and Imagery proving unsuccessful).

Step 2 - Discover the Cause –  In this section Roy explained that in order to discover the cause of resistance and therefore lack of success with the suggestion and imagery method, we need to allow the client to reach into their own subconscious mind to discover and reveal the cause of their unwanted behaviour or habit........... and NOT form our own opinions and conclusions.
Once the client has divulged the cause of resistance we can then move on.

The third cornerstone at the bottom right of the whiteboard represented step 3.
Step 3 - Release - Roy discussed some options for aiding the “release”, one being regression the other being parts therapy (parts therapy was the topic of the full day workshop which Roy held on the Sunday).   He reiterated the ever important fact that in order to use these methods you need to be fully trained and competent. Once release has been achieved through negotiation and dialogue with the client whilst in hypnosis, we can again move on.

The fourth cornerstone at the bottom left of the board – Step 4
Step 4 - Subconscious Relearning (or reprogramming).   Again, dialogue with the client is carried out in order to allow them to realize and understand things in a positive perspective at a subconscious level that the pattern or behaviour can be changed in a positive manner.

From here we can return to the first cornerstone Step 1 - Suggestion and Imagery.
Possibly the most important message in this presentation is to COMPLETE THE CYCLE - If you start a process – COMPLETE IT and don’t leave any “stone” unturned.   This presentation brought home the critical point that it is so easy to leave the cycle incomplete and therefore leaving the door open for the problem or difficulty to return.

For me, the presentation was highly beneficial in that it reminded me that hypnotherapy is not just about getting people to imagine, see, hear, taste, feel wonderful things............Our clients are valuable fellow human beings and deserve a complete and professional service from us as hypnotherapists.  After all, and in a nutshell, these are human minds and therefore lives that we are dealing with.  So it is of utmost importance that we tread with care, attention and thoroughness for beneficial and long term success. I hope that Roy will be able to return next year to help us continue our valuable work as successful, professional hypnotherapists.

FEAR OF FLYING
By Robin Harrison

I have become aware over the last few years that often when we respond emotionally around others, it is not always the words that we hear, but the way we hear them, that provoke the feelings of inadequacy or fear that we experience.

Have you ever considered that bodies are something like cell phones or transducers but in an organic form.   That for some people, who are highly sensitized, information is being picked up on a vibrational or frequency level, and converted instantaneously into destructive emotions via their body senses.   A feeling of being "kicked in the gut" of "panic", of being out of control, and yet their conscious mind has no way of rationalizing what is happening.

Joe Dispenza of What the Bleep Do We Know fame, says that "when we memorize emotional states our body becomes our mind.   Our body runs our mind.   It is running on automatic programming.  That we need to unmemorize the emotions so that we can become more".

Work with clients suffering from fear, or panic attacks has shown me that sometimes sound, is the determining factor.    It is the "feeling" factor.   The impact of the vibrational frequency of that sound heard and interpreted by the body (an organic transducer) on a deeper remembered level as I found in the case study below:

A young woman presented with a Fear of Flying.  After some discussion I chose regression as a means of therapeutic intervention.

On regressing her to a time and place where she first experienced the feelings that she was having now in relation to her fear of flying of being shut in, no control, and feeling a sense of panic she described being in a room with her mother.   She was a small child and her mother was yelling at her.   She felt confined by the space and was unable to do anything about it.   Her expression was “I am shut in a room with my mother and she is screaming at me”   Her memories were that of an verbally abusive mother where she was shut in the room, had no control and could not shut out the sound of her mothers voice.

I asked her to become aware of the tone of her mothers voice, what it sounded like and what emotions that tone produced.   I then asked her to change the sound, to turn it down, to filter it, in what ever way she felt most comfortable.

I invited her to believe that she did have the power to work with the control room of her mind to make a difference so that the sound of her mother’s voice no longer impacted on her.  She chose to imagine a filter on the outside of her ears, something like beautiful invisible ear muffs that would filter out the sound.   That she could hear what was necessary but the frequency of the sound could be toned down to a level that she was happy with.  Which she did.   She was then able to experience that same situation in calm and relaxed way with some sense of being in control.

With this regained sense of control and an understanding of the impact that tonal frequencies can have on us and our bodies we then visited once more her fear of flying.   It would seem that once she had some control over the sounds around her then she could sit back and enjoy the flight.

Which she did.

In My Opinion ...
The AHA World Hypnotherapy Conference
What a great experience the trip to Sydney was, to attend and speak at the 60th Anniversary AHA World Hypnotherapy Conference.

The Mercure Hotel venue was great and everything seemed to run quite smoothly - thanks to the fine conference organisational skills from Alison (Conexion Event Management Pty Ltd) and her staff.

The 1st keynote speaker of the AHA Conference sure rattled a few cages with his scathing comments about non-hypnotherapy modalities practised by some Hypnotherapists.  He tipped at least one cage over too, as the lady sitting next to me stormed out in disgust at his verbal attacks!

While I agree to some extent with his comments that some alternative modalities practiced alongside Hypnotherapy can confuse the public as to what is and is not Hypnotherapy ... I wonder how many Reiki and EFT practitioners he may have trampled to get his point across?

And as for his comments about not having a big-arsed Jag - just a big arse. Is that really walking the talk of a professional Hypnotherapist?

And what makes some experienced Hypnotherapists, who started with a minimum of structured training then honed their techniques on the job, think they can now dictate to newer Hypnotherapists as to what is (and is not) appropriate entry level training into Hypnotherapy?

In my opinion, scare mongering, hypocrisy and a pompous holier-than-thou attitude may be alive and well in Hypnotherapy!  I respectfully suggest that some Hypnotherapists may need to get over their delusions of grandeur!  After all, Hypnotherapy is a safe, natural complementary therapy!

As a hypnotherapist, it is always a pleasure to learn from some of the greats in our field. Dr. Stephen Gilligan has been honoured by the Milton Erickson Foundation by receiving the rarely given Lifetime Achievement Award in honour of his many contributions. Steve studied directly with Dr. Milton H. Erickson for many years and is known widely for his neo-Ericksonian approach which incorporates his own work on self-relations.

We are pleased to announce Trance Camp 2010 being held in Sydney in April 2010.

Trance Camp is open to anyone seriously interested in generative personal change and altered states of consciousness. This one or two week journey into the self is an experiential community for learning and experiencing trance while incorporating other consciousness-enhancing tools into practice. During Trance Camp, you will experience and learn a variety of skills allowing a new connection to self and personal transformation. Many participants return to Trance Camp year after year to experience not only profound trance, but Steve himself. This is a must-be-at workshop for all hypnotherapists in 2010.

HYPNOTHERAPY NEW ZEALAND
I have just added another internet domain to my ever-increasing list. www.hypnotherapynewzealand.co.nz is now set to become another strong performer over the upcoming years.

At this stage it's redirected to www.hypnosisnewzealand.co.nz but will soon sport a unique new site of its own as I enter a new phase of my passion for Hypnosis and sharing with those who enjoy doing it, rather than trying to control it!

Hypnosis Chatroom
This is a free service from HYPNOTES to anyone wanting to chat about Hypnosis. Enjoy!

The award recognising the release of my new book: Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy for Professionals.

Aaron McLoughlin and Mike Reeves-Smith also received similar awards for their new books.

Also at this conference, I presented two awards to Hypnosis New Zealand students.

Firstly Andrew Killick was recognised for his amazing passion in changing his career into Hypnotherapy. I jokingly referred to his award as "boots and all". He has transformed his home into a clinic, arranged out of town rooms for an extra clinic and quit his regular job!  That's "boots and all" commitment and I wish him all the best for a great future.

Also, Arpi Procter was recognised for her involvement in incorporating Hypnotherapy into mainstream health care. She (as a Drug & Alcohol Counsellor for a local Health Board) has been granted permission to incorporate her Hypnotherapy techniques into the patients' care regimes.  She is already having major successes!  Surprise surprise!  Well done Arpi!
