2010 Conference Weekend
Mostly this was a great success, with lots of positive reports from many sources.
It
was great to meet up with so many old and new friends at the recent
NZHF conference in Auckland. What a positive and progressive
bunch the Hypnosis New Zealand members are! Congratulations to
Ian Blaine and Jenny Crombie for their awards! (See pic to the right) These two passionate Hypnotherapists are the epitome of 21st century positivity and dedication from Hypnosis New Zealand
Hypnotherapists.
The
conference presenters were mostly again of a very high calibre and kept
everyone's attention throughout. So credit where credit is due -
well done to the conference team!
Congratulations also to Bill
Huddleston for receiving the Merv Holster award. In my opinion,
Bill is probably more like Merv than any other previous recipient - and
very proudly and humbly accepted that comment.
Hypnosis and NLP for Sports Injuries (Part 2)
By Adrian Metcalfe BSc(Hons), MSc Hypnosis Trainer, NLP Trainer and Consultant, Diploma in Sports Therapy, former NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
www.sportshypnosis.co.nz
In
part 1 of this article, I described how training athletes in self
hypnosis and positive imagery provides them with a new sense of
control. I also explained the physiological and cognitive
benefits from self hypnosis and imagery. In this part, I’m
going to describe pain control at work in sport, and introduce a few
other possibilities of using hypnosis and NLP in sports injuries
contexts.
Part 2 Pain Control It’s
important to remember that pain is most often there as a signal from
the body: “I’m damaged; I need protection; I need time to
recover”. Before helping an athlete with pain
control, its useful to check on their motivations, and in some cases
I’d suggest confirming with their health professional that the
underlying causes are being addressed.
In
the acute phase of the injury pain control using sensory distortion is
a highly effective and useful tool. Note that the medical
description of the ‘phase’ of injury is different from the common use
of ‘acute’. The ‘acute phase’ is when it has just happened to a
few days after. At a regional competition, the St John’s
paramedic brought over an injured rugby player who was highly
protective, so much so that a proper physical assessment could not be
made. Using hypnosis we reduced the pain so that the first aiders
could properly assess the injury (using simple suggestion for
analgesia), and then gave suggestions of ‘comfort’ providing the arm
remained still for his journey to hospital.
Sometimes
pain control in the post-acute phase (a few days after an injury) is
also appropriate. An athlete who had suffered a foot injury at
training a few days before, was experiencing some discomfort, and
changes to his gait pattern (he was limping). After a quick
physical check that no further damage would happen as a result of
playing, we decided that hypnosis could be useful in helping him reduce
the pain so he could play. He jokingly stated “it wouldn’t
hurt if I was drunk”, thereby giving the answer to how to deal with
this. We made the injured portion of his foot drunk, which was
very successful (and fun). Interestingly, the pain returned
after a couple of hours, but not enough to stop him competing. We
joked that his foot had “sobered up” by this time. This short
term analgesia is in line with research which demonstrates that pain of
organic origin (ie damaged tissue) responds to hypnosis as it would to
medication, ie it tends to wear off after a few hours.
Pain
in the chronic phase of injury (some time after the injury) also
responds very well to hypnosis and NLP. I was working with
an athlete who was recovering from a minor rotator cuff
injury. Even though full function had returned, he still
had some residual pain. We used a pain control technique based on
NLP, and I was as surprised as everyone else when the player announced
that the pain shifted immediately and completely. He returned to
training the following week, and competed the following weekend.
Bleeding Control Hypnosis
is also well known for bleeding control, with positive research coming
from both dental and surgical fields of medicine. Whilst it is
important to remember first aid protocols, the additional use of
hypnosis to facilitate a reduction in bleeding can be extremely
beneficial. When direct pressure is not applicable or
working to reduce blood flow, hypnosis could be used in addition to
indirect pressure, or in its place. Nose bleeds,
which cannot be bandaged, respond well to suggestion. Bleeding
within joints (in the case of torn ligaments), and bleeding within a
muscle sheath (which is extremely painful and dangerous) are difficult
to control using first aid protocols, but they could respond well to
suggestion (an application that appears to have little or no research).
Other Applications There
are many other applications, and I’ve described a few here just to let
you understand the wide range: Hypnosis to prepare for surgery, with
suggestions for faster post op recovery; time distortion, with an aim
of reducing boredom when rest is prescribed; catalepsy to immobilise
and protect an injured limb; correcting biomechanical imbalance through
increasing and decreasing muscle tension; increasing functional
strength to aid technique, are all examples of the wide variety of
applications within the sports injuries management domain.
Are
you interested in collaborating with other hypnotherapists, hypnotists
and NLP practitioners who have good experience in the sports
environment? I’d like to create a peer group of experienced
NLP practitioners and hypnotherapists who use these tools primarily in
sport. I’d like to develop our combined expertise through
workshops, studying case examples, and more. Please contact me
at:
adrian@strengthofmind.co.nz or call on (03) 327 4125.
Changes to the Directory of New Zealand Hypnotherapists
For
many years now Hypnosis New Zealand has been openly supporting and
promoting Hypnotherapy and Hypnotherapists in New Zealand via its
regular HYPNOTES Newsletter and Directory of New Zealand
Hypnotherapists. These facilities have provided many New Zealand
Hypnotherapists with free advertising, free promotions and free
referrals.
The
Hypnosis New Zealand Hypnotherapists Directory (that's been freely
provided to any local Hypnotherapist) is now becoming more focused on
Hypnosis New Zealand members (those who've trained with Hypnosis New
Zealand) and Hypnosis New Zealand supporters (those who continue to
openly support Hypnosis New Zealand).
Please check out the new-look Directory of New Zealand Hypnotherapists and note these differences:
-
All those listees who've trained with Hypnosis New Zealand, have been grouped in the main section of the directory.
-
Those
who have responded to my email of last week, offering their support for
the Mission Statement and Code of Ethics, have been listed in the main
section as supporters.
-
Those
who have yet to email me with confirmation of their support for the
Mission Statement and Code of Ethics, are now in the lower section of
the directory with a free one line basic listing. (This will be moved
to the main section and enhanced - on receipt of their support.)
Hypnosis New Zealand Mission Statement Hypnosis
New Zealand recognises and celebrates Hypnotherapy as a wonderfully
safe and effective natural therapy and supports the choice of each
individual Hypnotherapist to conduct client-focused therapy in either a
similar or a different manner from his/her peers; within New Zealand
laws and the Hypnosis New Zealand Code of Ethics.
Hypnosis New Zealand Hypnotherapists Code of Ethics
- A professional Hypnotherapist must conduct business in a responsible and respectable manner.
- A professional Hypnotherapist must recognise and uphold an obligation to the well-being of the client at all times.
- A
professional Hypnotherapist must always practice techniques and
procedures in accordance with appropriate training and experience.
- A professional Hypnotherapist must maintain safe and hygienic premises of practice.
- A professional Hypnotherapist will not offer any guarantee as to the effectiveness or outcome of any treatment.
- A
professional Hypnotherapist will always keep a client’s personal
details private, unless required to divulge that information by law, or
when any person may be at risk in any way.
Of
course there are a few things I don't personally agree with, or
support, in Hypnotherapy; and they have been naturally omitted from my
MS & COE so as to keep them as positively worded as possible.
So as long as you're not a scaremonger, doom & gloom merchant,
conspiracy theorist, or a controller; then we should get along just
fine as practitioners of a very safe, respected, effective and freely
practiced natural therapy! :)
While you're browsing through the Directory of New
Zealand Hypnotherapists, please take some time to view the Dunedin
listings - and note that Dale Wedlock, who was one of the very first to
ever earn the HNZ Certificate in Hypnotherapy, has now been the very
first to earn the new HNZ Diploma of Advanced Hypnotherapy. Well done
Dale! 2010 HYPNOTHERAPY COURSES

Testimonial Success!
"Twelve
days into an intense 14 day study and revision program, my brain
completely seized. My revision notes made no sense, my recall was zero
and the words in the text book no longer had any meaning. Not for the
first time - fear of failure was in the process of reinforcing fear of
failure.
In
panic I googled hypnotherapy thinking maybe it could remove the block.
Aaron's phone was the first that answered with a real live person. He
listened respectfully, heard my desperation and within 15 minutes gave
me a way through my panic. The next two days of study were amazingly
positive. I actually enjoyed my exam and look forward to the results I
worked hard and hoped for. I have made an appointment to continue with
Aaron for support to achieve further goals." Judi. Auckland. NZ

Hypnosummit is Back and Here to Help
from Scott Sandland
The Next HypnoSummit is September 25th. We
are making a few big changes to the world's only online hypnosis
conference. The first change is switching each of our speakers from a
one hour lecture to two hour workshops. This way they can get deeper
into the content and answer more of your questions.
In
addition to that, this HypnoSummit will focus on helping you thrive in
spite of economic uncertainty and volatility. Not every hypnotherapist
is hurting financially. A number of practitioners have practices that
are thriving even in these uncertain times. We've invited them to
share their secrets with you.
There
will be two tracks. Track One will be all about practical practice
building. Not just your same old advertising tips and press releases
but new ways to expand your business. New and emerging markets for
hypnotherapy and NLP services. Track Two will focus on hypnosis and
NLP techniques. More tools in your toolbox equates to more clients you
are able to assist and more services you can offer your existing
clients. Both tracks bring you up and coming speakers who have
demonstrated proficiency in exactly what you need to know to expand
your business and add dollars to your bottom line. Click here to see
the list of speakers and topics.
We again invite you to sign up early by offering the entire 24 hours of
exciting lectures for only $75. But, you must take advantage of this
and sign up NOW until midnight Sunday, August 15th. On Monday morning,
Aug. 16th the price for the HypnoSummit goes to $85. It will remain
there until Sept. 10th. Late registration, after Sept. 10th, will be
$95. That's still a steal for 24 hours of CEU's. Implementing just
one of the ideas these speakers share with attendees can earn you 10
times the cost of the HypnoSummit in no time. You can't afford to miss
this one!
If you are even remotely interested in becoming a professional
hypnotist or have been in private practice for decades, I promise there
will be new information here that you haven't ever seen......See you there, Scott.

Spend an Intimate Evening with
Andrew Newton
Christchurch - Monday 4th October
In 2007 we arranged for Andrew Newton, world famous hypnotist, to conduct his one day Advanced Hypnotherapy seminar in Auckland . The feedback from over 80 hypnotherapists and students who attended was almost unanimously positive. Andrew
kept us enthralled and interested all day. And we laughed a lot too!
Andrew is an exceptional (if somewhat controversial at times)
presenter. It all added up to a really enlightening and fun day.
Andrew Newton is the hypnotist who taught Paul McKenna! Since
that first seminar we have received many enquiries from people wanting
to know when Andrew would be back in New Zealand as they wanted to
attend training with him.
We are delighted to announce that we have been able to arrange for Andrew to conduct a very special evening for you.
An Intimate Evening with Andrew Newton A lot of what he will teach and demonstrate will be new.
To
take advantage of this unique opportunity and learn from one of the
world's most experienced and successful hypnotists, you need to enrol
ASAP. Check out the notice and registration form, as this promises to be a great evening, and very worthwhile!
Places are still available for the Auckland evening, next Monday, so be in quick to be part of this amazing evening. See registration form.
