Hypnotherapist: Carla van Voorst
Hi, I'm Carla van Voorst and I am a proud graduate of Hypnosis New Zealand.
As you can see from my name, I am originally from the Netherlands
although I call myself a proud Kiwi now. I have spend half my
life in NZ and absolutely love it here. I first arrived in
Wellington and have worked my way through the country, from
Christchurch to the Manawatu, to the Bay of Plenty before eventually
settling in Auckland.
After many years in the corporate world and working in a number of
different industries, I always felt like I didn't "belong" there.
I worked my way up the ladder but there always seemed to be something
missing. Through my own trials and tribulations I have always had
a keen interest in health and wellbeing and especially nutrition and
weight. Having come close to eating disorders for many years,
struggling with my relationship with food and obsessive exercise - one
day I just decided enough was enough. Obviously my will power and
conscious mind power weren't strong enough. Out of the blue I
decided I was going to see a hypnotherapist. That changed my
life! As well as eating less and exercising more, I found I
was eating healthier, not because I had to but simply because I wanted
to.
That was such an eye opener to me and I decided to learn more about the
Psychology of Eating and the way the Subconscious Mind "drives"
us. By "accident" I came across a course in the Food Psychology
Coaching, which I became qualified in. It was a huge eye opener
for me. Suddenly I understood that ultimately what you eat is determined mostly by how you
eat; which is mainly determined by your beliefs about food, body image
and life. I also learned that if the subconscious mind, for
whatever reason, doesn't belief it is safe for us to lose weight, we
can have all the conscious intent in the world but it simply won't
allow us to release it. Why didn't somebody tell me this 20 years
ago? All those years I forced, strained and deprived myself, when
my issues should have been "attacked" from a reverse perspective.
Identify why the subconscious mind doesn't think it is safe for us to
be a certain way, release the blocks - and healthy eating (and thus
weight loss) becomes a side effect!
I felt I had to share that with others to prevent them from having to
follow the same road as me. Not only had I struggled with my
relationship with food all my life, but I also had some tragic events
that seemed to be creating negative patterns in my life. No way
was I going to continue on that road. So I started researching
courses I could take and eventually came across Hypnosis New
Zealand. Grant's training stood out from the rest mainly because
of the immense number of testimonials from past students about Grant's
ongoing support of his students and the way he tirelessly works to
promote and develop the Hypnotherapy industry. I took his course
a year and a half ago and since then I have build up my own – what I
call – Subconscious Mind Coaching business and work from the
beautiful Seven Senses Wellness Centre in Ponsonby, Auckland.
The past few years have been a huge learning curve. I won't get
in to all the lessons I've learned, but one thing I would like to
stress is that if you work with clients who come to see you for weight
loss, spend a great amount of time finding out exactly why their
subconscious mind may not think it is safe for them to lose
weight. Just getting them to turn to healthy eating and exercise
may work for some, but for most of these people who have tried every
diet under the sun, there are some deep unreasonable associations to
survival that keeps their situation in place. Some Survival Instincts
are activated because it helped them in the past – however it may not
be beneficial for them in today's environment. Find out
what "Secondary Gain" they may be getting from being overweight.
Secondary Gains are often subconscious, the client will will most
likely tell you there is "absolutely no benefit" for them to be
overweight. It is funny though how they react when they find out
what has been going on subconsciously.
I love my job! I love being able to help clients identify their
subconscious block, limiting beliefs and negative life patterns.
I love helping them release them and I LOVE getting the emails of
success stories. That is what it is all about for me. If I
can help people find some peace of mind in this hectic world, if I can
help them to have a sense of freedom and control over their lives than
that makes me extremely joyful and satisfied. Life is not about
finding yourself, it is about creating yourself!
It has been a massive change – going from Project Management to Food
Psychology Coaching, Hypnotherapy and Subconscious Mind Coaching.
Finally I feel like I belong! I would love to hear from anybody
who would like to have a chat or share ideas – that is how we grow
awareness of our industry, by sharing and supporting each other and
making sure that we are the best that we can be at what we do.

Natural Therapists of New Zealand
A few days ago - on
September 1st, Karen & I launched a great new Directory &
Webpage service for all NZ Natural Therapists (including of course Hypnotherapists).
Natural Therapists of New Zealand is set to become one of the most
effective and popular resources of its type in NZ. It's only been live a few days and is already #1 on a Google NZ search for "Natural Therapists".
As
an introductory special, we are offering all NZ Natural Therapists a FREE
6 MONTH TRIAL of a directory listing and associated business webpage.
Please take a look at the beginnings of the Natural Therapists of New Zealand here and send in your therepist/therapy information, as per the listing info page and we'll create a free 6 months listing for you. There is also a printable pdf checklist of the information required.
Once you've registered for your free trial, your web page will be designed to keep visitors on it
- rather than lure them off by many tempting exit links. The
simple effective design, combined with very reasonable pricing (after your trial period)
makes this a great alternative to other similar services that are
around twice the price. So, this is probably the best value
webpage and directory listing combo in NZ!
Please check out the new site and send in your information. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
November Hypnotherapy Course
The next Hypnosis New Zealand 5 Day Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy Course is November 7th - 11th in Auckland.
It's
aimed at those who are serious about using Hypnotherapy in a
professional practice; either as a stand-alone modality, or in
conjunction with Counseling, NLP, Life Coaching, etc. It's
suitable for absoulute beginners, or those who have already had a little
experience and want to boost their knowledge via a very hands-on course.
This course is interactive, fast-paced and focused on the teaching you
to become a competent Hypnotherapist. Learn all the in-depth
skills of Modern Suggestive Hypnotherapy and so much more! As well as loads of practice with your classmates, it
features an afternoon of REAL clients with REAL issues to practice your
Hypnotherapy techniques on. On completion of this practical
course and associated open book examination, you will receive the
Hypnosis New Zealand Diploma of Hypnotherapy.
The
full price of this course is just $1400.00 - but you can save
$200.00 if you pay 4 weeks or more before the course, or maybe even
more if you are a recent past HNZCH student!

New "DoubleDown" Induction for Self Hypnosis
For many years
I've recommended to old countdown type inductions for clients
practicing self-hypnosis, or those clients wanting extra relaxation to
help them drop off to sleep easier. Most of the latter clients
complain of a busy mind that simply keeps on thinking about all the
actual or imagined activities of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
They are intrigued when I tell them that the best way to drop off to sleep, is
simply to make the busy mind busier! It seems like quite a
contradiction, but it certainly works very well. The method is to
simply time the breathing with a downwards count from 100, in 3s.
EG: Breathing in - think 100; breathing out - subtract 3; fully exhaled
focus on the answer (97). Then keep on this system as you
continue breathing and counting down in 3s. For those who are
good mathematicians and find that this is too easy to take over their
consciousness; I ask them to start at 500 and count down in 7s!
Now for the new induction!
I've been thinking about this for a few years and it finally came of
age during my last Advanced Hypnotherapy course, when I was relaxing to
another Hypnotherapist's induction. Something she said, suddenly
helped me to combine all my previous ideas in a simple and useable format. I
assume that it's an original thought, but you never know who I might
have concurrent thoughts with. So if anyone has seen it
published before, please let me know. Anyway, I've named it the
"DoubleDown" and it's bloody great! Several trials with
students, clients and peers have reinforced its usefulness. The method is
initially a bit unusual, but once you get into the swing of it, it's
very focusing and directs one down, down, down, to a very deep and
substantial relaxation. (And easily to full sleep, if you allow yourself to keep on descending through the trance stages.)
The method:
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 10
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 9
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 8
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 7
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 6
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 5
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 4
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 3
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 2
Breathe in to the count of 5 - and breathe out to the count of 1
Breathe in to the count of 4 - and breathe out to the count of 1
Breathe in to the count of 3 - and breathe out to the count of 1
Breathe in to the count of 2 - and breathe out to the count of 1
Breathe in to the count of 1 - and breathe out to the count of 1
The swap over from the constant "breathe in" count of 5, coupled with a
decending "breathe out" count from 10 - 1; to a descending "breath in"
count from 5 - 1 coupled with a constant "breath out" count - is a
pivotal moment than begins a real rush of deepening. This speed
up facilitates a relaxation, trance, or sleep state very rapidly. It
looks complicated at the start, but pretty soon becomes very
clear. Please try it and let me know your thoughts.
The 2011 NZHF Conference
I attended the 2011 annual NZHF Conference and Awards Dinner in
Auckland at the beginning of this month. It was great to catch up with several Hypnosis New Zealand
members: Ian Blaine, Jenny Crombie, Barbara Smith, Arpi Procter, Tom
Connelly and Praveen Ravindranath. Top marks to Barbara for her very
standoutable signwritten car! Great advertising Barbara!
During the Saturday conference sessions, there were several interesting
and informative speakers operating from two different rooms. The
presentations that I chose to attend were from: Kevin Bateman, Anita
Moleta, Aaron McLauglin, Evans Brown and Alan Patching. It was a good
mix of speakers on practical topics that suited my interests - while
those delegates of a more "spiritual" persuasion were reportedly well
catered for in the 2nd room.
At the Awards Dinner on Saturday evening, Hypnosis New Zealand honoured
two up-and-coming Hypnotherapists; Caterina Findsen & Ivan Judd for
their passion in beginning their Hypnotherapy practices. Also, we
honoured one of the great men of New Zealand Hypnosis; Brian Head, by
awarding him honourary membership of Hypnosis New Zealand. Brian is
the very first person to receive this award. He was also the recipient
of a surprise NZHF President's award. >>>>> Brian receives his honouary membership award from Grant.
